Children Creating Art: Young Artist Workshops and Tots on Tour

By Cassandra Demski, Curator of Education

On Saturday, July 17th, Grounds For Sculpture was packed with aspiring artists!  On this day, GFS offered four Young Artist Workshops as well as Tots on Tour.

The Young Artist Workshops provided an opportunity for children to escape the summer heat and create artwork inspired by the Spring/Summer 2010 temporary exhibitions.  The morning session for 6-9 year olds was Repurposed Plastic with instructor April Zay.  In this workshop, participants reused plastic water bottles to create unique artwork, as Chakaia Booker does with discarded tires.  In the afternoon, 6-9 year olds took the Sculptor’s Model workshop, taught by instructor Margareta Warlick.  Focused on the artwork of Keith Haring, workshop students created sculptural models of mythic creatures.

All of the workshops for 10-14 year old students were entirely filled.  In the morning, the children in Cast-offs Recreated with Margareta Warlick created sculptural reliefs out of rubber, tire pieces, metal and other findings similar to materials Chakaia Booker uses.  The afternoon workshop for 10-14 year olds was Crowded Cartoon Clusters taught by instructor Michael LaRiccia.  In this class, students toured the Keith Haring exhibition and created construction paper pyramids covered with cartoon images.

Tots on Tour, taught by Joslyn Johnson, was as popular as ever.  This program for children ages 3-5 and accompanying adult companions ran at 11am and 1pm.  Again, the theme for Tots on Tour was Keith Haring, who is known for using bold colors.  The class started by reading Pop Warhol’s Top by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo.

Next, a docent took the children on a tour of the Keith Haring exhibition while Joslyn prepared art materials.

Back in the classroom, the children created bold and colorful handprint paintings that were mounted on large paper when finished.

Most of the children left Grounds For Sculpture with interesting creations as well as a new understanding of artists Chakaia Booker and Keith Haring.  This would not have been possible without the effort of many volunteers and docents who helped run these events; thank you!

Tots on Tour, for children ages 3-5 , will run on Saturdays August 21, September 18, October 16 and November 20 at 11am and 1pm. This walk-in program does not require pre-registration, but space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The next Young Artist Workshops will run on Saturday, November 20th at 1pm. This workshop will be for students ages 6 to 12 and includes three holiday themed classes: ornaments, origami sculpture and candles.  To register in advance, please call (609) 586-0616.
