BINGO – Mixed Media Collage, by Linda Pickering

This exhibition at Grounds For Sculpture is open until July 18th in the Education Gallery.

Featured today is the mixed media artwork Bingo by Linda Pickering, part of the Member’s Musings Exhibition for 2010.

Bingo by Linda Pickering

This work owes its existence to the two old “bingo” cards it features.  I had taken a collage class given in Lawrenceville a few years ago by Aylin Green, the artist who is currently the Development Associate at Grounds For Sculpture.  Aylin encouraged us all to seek and use found objects, particularly ones made of paper.  She shared her treasure trove of findings with us, and I went home with those “bingo” cards, attracted by the strong graphic design.

Planning to make a piece that used them, the grid pattern stood out, so I thought about incorporating other images that echoed that.  A crossword puzzle from the NY Times (including the clues), some striped tissue paper, and a photo of a checkered tablecloth all seemed to fit.  Some dabs of paint, a bird with yellow cherries and a butterfly and daisies provide color.  A bottle of sparkling wine, uncorked, supplies some whimsy.

Linda Pickering is a docent at Grounds For Sculpture and a founding member of the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network Gallery located at 2683 Main Street in Lawrenceville.  You can see more of her work – and that of thirty other local artists – at the gallery which is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  New shows open on the second Saturday of each month, with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. where you can enjoy wine and tasty bites while meeting the artists.
